FAA Form 8610-2: A&P Mechanic Application Guide
FAA Form 8610-2 is the Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application — the paperwork you submit after passing your A&P oral and practical exam. Getting it right the first time avoids delays in receiving your certificate.
What is FAA Form 8610-2?
FAA Form 8610-2, titled “Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application,” is the official application used to apply for an FAA airman certificate or rating — including the A&P mechanic certificate. The form is completed in coordination with your Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME) after successfully completing your oral and practical tests. Your DME signs the completed form and forwards it to the FAA CAPS (Civil Aviation Personnel System) for processing.
Key Sections of the 8610-2
Block I — Applicant Information
Legal name, date of birth, place of birth, citizenship, SSN (or FTN), address, and email. Must match your government-issued ID exactly.
Block II — Type of Application
Select the type of certificate or rating you are applying for — for most A&P candidates, this will be Original or Additional Rating.
Block III — Certificate Applied For
Indicate Mechanic, and select Airframe, Powerplant, or both. Most candidates apply for the combined A&P.
Block IV — Aircraft/Simulator Used
For mechanic applicants, this section reflects the practical test equipment and aircraft used during the practical.
Block V — Record of Tests
Your DME records written test results, oral and practical test outcomes, and dates. Ensure all written exam results are available and current.
Block VI — DME Recommendation
Your DME signs and certifies your eligibility based on your test performance and documentation review.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Name does not match government-issued ID
- Missing or incorrect date of birth
- Expired written test results (most written tests are valid for 24 months)
- Selecting the wrong type of application
- Missing SSN or FTN
- Illegible handwriting in handwritten sections
- Not confirming your written test scores are in the CATS/PSI system before the practical
